The Four Main Areas of Oriental Medicine

In recent years, oriental medicine practices and acupuncture have been coming to the forefront of medical treatment options. The ancient healing art of acupuncture with a documented history of 5000 years provides us with an alternative to conventional medicine that has a propensity to cause side effects all too often.

Because acupuncture addresses the underlying cause of diseases and is customized based on the needs of the patient it is deemed a type of ‘functional medicine’. So, a couple of people may be treated for headaches with acupuncture, but since the underlying cause of the headache may be different for each person, their treatments may be quite different as well. When the underlying cause of the disease is addressed, the symptoms are either greatly reduced or completely disappear altogether.

There are four main areas comprising Oriental medicine. They include:

Acupuncture – This treatment involves the activation of specific acupoints along the body either by laser, needle, or pressure. The activation or stimulation of these points results in a chemical reaction within the body that generates an ideal environment for the body to heal itself. And since no external chemicals are used, there are no side effects. The needles used in acupuncture are as thin as the hair in your scalp and does not cause pain like regular needles.

Nutrition – The basis of functional nutritional therapy is “Food is the medicine.” The food that provides nourishment to our bodies creates who we are at a cellular level. Food therapy is recommended by acupuncturists combined with nutrient supplementation and herbal therapy to help patients acquire optimal health.

Qi Gong – Qi gong literally translates to ‘breath practice.’ This breathing exercise helps clear and mobilize the body’s energy channels which generate an optimal environment for the body’s healing and rejuvenation a whole. Medical Qi Gong produces benefits such as hormonal balance and regulation, enhanced immune function, and the lowering of blood pressure level.

Lifestyle – Lifestyle advice is provided by acupuncturists to assist patients in not only achieving optimal health but also helping maintain it for a lifetime.

Being a holistic type of treatment, acupuncture addresses all facets of existence: mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional. The combination of acupuncture and nutritional treatments can virtually address any health issue. The body is very much capable of healing itself. All we need to do is to provide the environment for the healing to occur.
